What a wonderful Beer Regatta 2021!
After a very difficult time for everyone, the Beer Regatta Committee were pleased to put on many of the well-loved events.
Terry and Teresa Hoare kindly agreed to be our Openers this year and it was a privilege for Regatta to pay tribute to them both, and to recognise their huge contribution to the Coastguard service – Terry marked his 1000th callout this year. You only have to have a quick look at the Beer Coastguard Facebook page to get some idea of what a busy team they are! As a community we are so fortunate to have Terry and the other Beer Coastguards – brave, self-less men and women who stick their heads about the parapet and say ‘Yes, I could do that’, ready to respond to callouts where the public are in danger, ready to save lives.
The week was full of happy faces on happy people – the flags were flying once again, the ‘lockdown’ Scarecrows were spruced up and were back out all over the village celebrating Regatta Week for the first, but maybe not the last time, the beach huts were decorated – all these things creating some great Regatta atmosphere.
We had the angling, the rowing, canoeing, Lugger and dinghy racing all out in the bay. At the Football Club the children raced like Olympians, they were entertained, we had the Pavement Art Competition, Fossil Fun, Scavenger Hunt and Pebble Painting.
Small faces and some bigger faces too were eagerly peering in the windows along Fore Street, and many Treasure Hunters walked around the village, white sheets and pens in hand, looking for clues and spotting the magnificent scarecrows.
We had 16 teams for the excellent online Regatta Quiz, the Craft Fair was great – all local, really talented stall holders. We were entertainingly educated about the ‘Beer Micro-climate’ we all talk about, and had a wonderful display from the Beer Coastguards and the lifeboats from Sidmouth and Exmouth. We were fed by Scouts and Puffins and were entertained by wonderful fireworks which rounded off Regatta with a bang!
Thank you for your continued support and Long Live Beer Regatta!
