Welcome to Beer Regatta 2021!
After a very difficult time for everyone we are pleased to announce that we are able to put on many of the well-loved Regatta events again this summer!
Looking at the Beer Regatta Programme Archive on the website, from the earliest one back in 1925 right through to the 1950’s, all these programmes are titled ‘Beer Regatta and Sports’ and we will resurrect this theme this year, with sailing, rowing, angling, Robbie’s Races….. to mention just a few of the events that are built on the traditions of past Regattas – outdoor, spread out, low risk.
In addition to the sporting events, we will have the Beer Scouts Big Breakfast, Canoe and Kayak Fun, the Quiz, the Regatta Talk, the Craft Fair, outside entertainment and craft events for the children, and more – and we will be rounding off the week with the Firework Finale! We hope to create the usual Regatta Week atmosphere with the flags flying in Fore Street again and lots of music in the village.
We know some people will be disappointed that Regatta won’t be completely back to normal this summer. We are sorry but we still do not feel confident to hold some of the popular events where people do crowd closely together or mix indoors, despite the lifting of restrictions, but we hope you will understand our caution – our priority, as always, is to keep everyone safe and to respect those people in the village who are not quite ready to return to ‘old normal’ just yet.
After much thought though, the Regatta Committee have decided to go ahead with the fireworks as a fantastic end to Regatta Week 2021! We understand that some people may be anxious about this, with rising cases and the village being busy, but we feel there is sufficient space for people to spread out and make their own decisions to socially distance from others if they want to attend.
Despite not having the Decorated Rafts or the Children’s Fancy Dress this time, there are no excuses for not getting creative as we will have the Fancy Dress Scarecrow Festival! During the first Lockdown, one of the many community ideas we had as a village was for people to make and decorate scarecrows – they were brilliant, and they popped up all over the place. If you took part last time, please dig out your scarecrow and join in; now we have the visitors back, we thought it would be a great idea to share these creations with the wider world. We hope you will have a wander around the village, perhaps with the Treasure Hunt in your hand, and see how many you can spot!
We have decided not to produce a Regatta Programme this year – we plan to put details of events on the website and our social media pages, and we will also have posters in the village, with the board at the top of Sea Hill giving full information. As last year, we have not asked local businesses for sponsorship or advertising – we appreciate how generous these businesses have been in contributing to Regatta year after year and it would not be right to approach them for financial support at this time; there will not be a Grand Draw. There will be opportunities to contribute to the Regatta funds during the week for those who are able to do so, but we understand for many families that money is very tight at the moment, so the most important thing is to come, join in and have fun!
Thank you for your continued support and Long Live Beer Regatta!
