Regatta 2021 - A Return to our Roots.......The AGM took place on Monday 15th March and the Committee made the decision to take a cautious approach to Regatta this year, even if there are no restrictions in place after June. We hope to hold something of a ‘Halfway House’ event, with more activities than last year but without the indoor events or the large events that draw a crowd, all subject to further government announcements of course.Looking at the Beer Regatta Programmes Archive on our website, from the earliest one back in 1925 right through to the 1950’s, all these programmes are titled ‘Beer Regatta and Sports’ and we are hopeful we can resurrect this theme this year, with sailing, rowing, hopefully the running races, to mention just a few of the events that are built on the traditions of past Regattas – outdoor, spread out and low risk. We hope we can create some Regatta Week atmosphere with the flags flying in Fore Street again, perhaps a bit of music in the village, outside entertainment and craft events for the children, and other events that we hope will also be viable, although final decisions will not be made until much nearer the time. The events we have decided not to go ahead with include the Barrel Rolling, the Regatta Dance, Bingo, Spoofing, Decorated Rafts, the Children’s Fancy Dress Competition – although we are working on an alternative Fancy Dress Competition in place of this – and the fireworks. We know some people will be disappointed that Regatta won’t be back to normal this summer, however we expect the village to be extremely busy again and we want to make sure that the events we run are focused on keeping everyone safe. We are very mindful of our responsibilities as event organisers, and respectful that many people may still be wary of large gatherings taking place in the village, even if they are legally permitted by then, so we hope you will understand why we have taken these decisions. We have also decided not to produce a glossy Regatta Programme this year – we plan to put details of events online and have posters in the village, like we did last summer, and possibly produce a simple leaflet to keep people informed – another nod to the Regattas of the past perhaps. As last year, we will not ask local businesses for sponsorship or advertising – we appreciate how generous these businesses have been in contributing to Regatta year after year and it would not be right to approach them for financial support at this time; there will not be a Grand Draw.As 2021 is going to be another modified Regatta we want to brand it (like we did with Regatta Remotely) so people are aware that it is going to feel different. We will be launching a competition soon where you can vote on the best branding suggestions……….so watch this space! ... See MoreSee Less

Regatta 2021 AGM Notice -Following the Government announcement, Beer Regatta Committee is cautiously optimistic that we can plan for some events this summer, subject to any further restrictions of course. We are also aware that the village is likely to be extremely busy with holidaymakers, and we are cognisant of the concern this may cause to some residents who have spent the last year taking great care with social distancing, and possibly shielding. In view of this, we hope you will understand that there will be events we probably can do but also some events that we feel it is best not to do.If you would like to join the Regatta Committee, we will be holding our AGM and first full planning meeting of 2021 on Monday 15th March at 7:30pm on Zoom. If you would like to register to attend this meeting please email beerregatta@yahoo.com by Thursday 11th March ... See MoreSee Less

Happy Valentines Day from Beer Village. The wonderful Beer Men’s Shed have launched a digital museum which will capture our beautiful village history. Head over to www.beervillage.co.uk and click on Village History to take a look...........As of today - Valentine's Day - Beer has got something new that villagers have been asking for, its own Museum. But, as we are like Buck Rogers and this is the 21st Century, it's a digital museum!Building on the great work that Karen Stevens has done with Beer Memories, the new Beer Memories Museum is a place to keep your best old photos, sound recordings and videos of Beer. Sharing your photos of Beer means that you can bring back memories to villagers and visitors alike, but they will still be there for generations to come. As Valentine's Day is all about love, and as during COVID lockdown you may not have too much to do, how's about showing some of your love of Beer by digging into your photo albums and sending copies in for the new Museum? It would be very easy to forget what Beer used to be like - how many shops there were, the people who lived here, the fun of Regatta and what the village looked like. Karen has already sent in over 150 pictures to start off the Museum, and the chaps at Beer Men's Shed have been gluing it all together to make it work. Beer Parish Council has donated the digital space to store it all, and the National Lottery has provided a grant from its Local Connections Fund that will help to get it looking professional. You can find the new Beer Memories Museum by going to beervillage.co.uk/village-news/new-beer-memories-digital-museum/OR you can go straight to www.beervillage.co.uk/museum/ Please send any pictures or documents for the Museum to Chris Pickles at chris@picklesnet.com - and any questions or suggestions about the Museum too. ... Today we had a rather lovely long phone conversation with Alan Abbott who told us that the first printed Regatta programme was in 1923. They were printed from 1923 to 1939 and then there was a break due to world war 2 until 1947. So we’re still looking for these years -1923 to 192919381948 and 1949All of the 1950’s1960 to 1963 and 1965 to 1967It would be great if anyone has these years.......? ... See MoreSee Less
